A towering chocolate ganache cake, presents, and kisses, kisses and more kisses, were all part of the 40th birthday bash Tuesday at Mohegan Sun for singer, actor, producer and New Kid On the Block Donnie Wahlberg.

The nearly middle-aged "new kid" proved the number is just a number as he met with, and kissed, a room full of die-hard fans before the "official" party at the Ultra88 club there, and taking time to share his philosophy on getting older.

"You get smarter as you get older," he said between schmoozing with the almost all-female audience that joined him for cake before the sold-out open-to-the-public party began. "But I'm still making music, still enjoying what I do and life is good."

Guess so. Wahlberg traveled to Connecticut via a flight from California to Boston Monday but had a little birthday fun of his own with the limo provided by Mohegan. Instead of coming straight to the Nutmeg State, he took advantage of the free ride and spent several hours visiting friends in Beantown, arriving in Connecticut a lot later than expected.

Among those who attended the Wahlberg blast were Diddy's "Making His Band" MTV music man Rob Lewis, Dropkick Murphy's Ken Casey, director Brian Goodman, and model and Klein/Hilfiger actor/model Jaizen Homiller.

And his favorite gift on such a momentous birthday?

"A picture of my two sons," said the proud papa about his boys Alexander and Elijah Wahlberg. "They are the best."
