He’s got the right stuff

Donnie Wahlberg and Jennifer Esposito star in “Blue Bloods.” The drama airs Fridays at 10 p.m. on CBS.

If there’s one thing Donnie Wahlberg is an expert at, aside from hangin’ tough, it’s playing a cop. His acting résumé is littered with detectives and lieutenants. But all that experience has served him well, especially considering his new role as, um, a cop. Wahlberg says  that “Blue Bloods” offered him more than the regular crime show, though.

“I think a lot of cop shows … there’s an element of humanity that’s missing,” he says. “I probably wouldn’t have played this cop if not for two reasons – one, it’s such a fun character, and two, because of the family part.”

On the show, Wahlberg plays the hot-headed detective Danny Reagan, who is following in the footsteps of his father, the NYPD police chief (Tom Selleck). Reagan’s sister is a prosecutor (Bridget Moynihan) and his young brother is a police officer (Will Estes). With a family whose careers are so intricately entwined, the show explores the sometimes-strained family dynamics — subject matter not too distant from Wahlberg’s own family, which includes brother Mark Wahlberg.

“I was a musician and worked on my brother Mark’s career and helped him. There were times where he said, ‘I want to be my own man now,’” Wahlberg says. “I, on the one hand, am proud of him and support him to the fullest — and I’m sure he feels the same way about me — but we also want to have our own thing. We lean on each other as family. We don’t lean on each other for work.”

Ooooh, Donnie!

Wahlberg has his own cheering section while he’s on the job. Co-star Jennifer Esposito explains:

“Oh my God, [shooting on location] attracts a crowd. Not ‘we’ attract a crowd. Donnie attracts a crowd. They’re regulars. They come all the time, but if it’s on a Friday, they bring pizza. They bring chips. They sit around. I turned around one time — he’s sitting in the middle of them telling stories. He’s hysterical and he’s the nicest person to his fans that I have ever seen in my life.”

NKOTB revival

Wahlberg on touring again with New Kids on the Block:

“[The last tour] was special because it was really special for the fans. A lot of them went on to have lives after their teenage years and the music gave them a chance to feel young and free again. I felt a great sense of responsibility to treat it properly and to respect the fans as much as possible.”
