The New Kid goes Old Vegas by playing in a lounge
By Melinda Sheckells | February 3rd, 2011
This February, The Lounge at Palms will welcome Joey McIntyre, the youngest member of the late-’80s supergroup New Kids on the Block. Now 38, he’s not a baby anymore, but he’s still adorably cute [insert swoon here].
McIntyre will take the stage with Eman, a.k.a. Emanuel Kiriakou, a noted singer/songwriter who has worked with Whitney Houston, David Archuleta and Celine Dion. In 2002, the duo recorded an album called One Too Many: Live From New York, which came after McIntyre was forced to improvise a show with Kiriakou because his band was delayed by snow. The performance was a hit, and they’ve been touring off and on for years.
“We like to try new things,” McIntyre says. “This is not for people who are going to be strict and set in their ways.”
In One Too Many at Midnight, McIntyre and Kiriakou go for an all-acoustic style, which McIntyre says is perfect for the Palms’ 200-seat venue. The set will include songs from all genres—some of his solo stuff, some New Kids stuff and then a few numbers for fun, such as Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.” “We’ll be very honest if we feel like a song didn’t go very well. We’ll definitely share that with the audience,” McIntyre says. “The setting is so intimate anyway; this really only works for a place like the lounge.”
McIntyre thinks of this as a warm-up for his summer arena tour, which will pair New Kids on the Block with the Backstreet Boys for a fan scream-fest. When asked if he’s concerned about playing an intimate venue given the overzealous nature of his fan base, McIntyre laughs and notes that he has yet to request extra security.
“I’ll be aware of my surroundings because these girls will be coming in for the weekend and they just want to have a good time and let it all hang out,” he says. “You know, Las Vegas is the place for that. I’m going to be watching my back a little bit, I think.”
